Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he intends to leave office within the next few weeks. He made the announcement on June 27 while addressing a rally of his supporters.
“They told me I would never leave the post of president, [but] these are my last days and weeks as president of the republic. I will be president for a few more weeks, and then I will resign,” Vucic said.
He added that after stepping down he plans to take part in parliamentary elections in Serbia. Back in April, Vucic said he was ready to hold an early parliamentary vote. The election is expected to take place as early as autumn.
In recent months, the Serbian leader had repeatedly suggested that he might leave office. His current presidential term expires in 2027. Under the constitution, the same person cannot serve as president for more than two terms.
Vucic has previously said he would not change the constitution in order to remain in power, stating: “I am not a dictator.”
Aleksandar Vucic is widely seen as a politician sympathetic to Russia. In May 2025, he visited Moscow for the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine and took part in the May 9 parade.
Meanwhile, Serbia has seen mass student protests since November 2024. Demonstrators are demanding early presidential elections. The collapse of a station canopy in Novi Sad triggered what became the largest protest wave in Serbia in the 21st century.
