European leaders have released a unified declaration regarding the forthcoming Alaska summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. The official communication was published on the European Commission's website.
The statement emphasizes: "We firmly believe that success requires a comprehensive strategy involving diplomatic engagement, continued assistance to Ukraine, and sustained pressure on Russia to halt its unlawful aggression."
European Union officials expressed their willingness to contribute through diplomatic channels while sustaining military and economic aid to Ukraine. They stressed that any peace discussions must include Ukrainian representatives and be preceded by a cessation of hostilities.
"Genuine negotiations are only possible when accompanied by a ceasefire or significant de-escalation. Ukraine must be central to any resolution of this conflict. We uphold the fundamental principle that international boundaries cannot be altered through force. The current frontlines should serve as the basis for talks," the announcement clarified.
Previously, The Wall Street Journal reported, based on insider accounts, that European and Ukrainian officials had presented the U.S. with an alternative peace framework. The proposal outlines an initial ceasefire followed by territorial exchanges agreed upon by both parties.
